I'm usually a sucker for a clean Z but that rear strut tower brace gives me a nasty feeling. Not sure why but it's a problem for me. The wiring questionable as well. Push button starting was NOT an option on these. And those switches on the dash were installed for something, the question is what. Looks like someone's unfinished project which is always scary. Wiper motor not connected... why not? Aftermarket gauges had to be spliced into something. Too many red flags the more I look at it. CP

I agree with all you said, as a previous owner of a 72 Z-Car. Could be wrong, but I think they only came with 4-speed or auto.

If you're getting a 240z that has been modified, for god sake put the triple webers on. It's also not a first-series 1971 model (which would make it actually somewhat rare) and its been modified enough that it's got no "originality" value, so that means that all of that 14k needs to come from somewhere else.
For a 14k 240z, you need either some racing heritage, serious performance mods, or an extremely rare model.
9k though? Yeah. This is definitely worth it.

Bad idea. It's clean, but it's not worth 14k. That is expensive enough that you can get a middle-of-the-pack $5000 240z and easily have it brought up to that sort of spec. It's a $9k Z.

The gauges are pretty awful and so are the headlights, so I disagree. I'm also unsure what to think about the unpainted welded patchwork on the rear strut towers.

You're completely right.
In the US though, The 240z sold about 150,000 compared to 15,000 outside of the US (I don't know about Japanese sales). They're literally 10x more common here than internationally.
My local craigslist points to about 4-5 240zs that may not be as pretty, but are just as clean for about 7k, and they can get down to 4-5k for rougher daily drivers.

I think that one is 100300 miles, since the odometers rolled over at 100,000 miles. But that even has the original rims . Which are pretty rare.

Check this out:
My hope is to find a poor one with a bad motor when I graduate in a year and a half. The L engines are hard to find parts for, because we didn't get nearly as many diesels, 4-cylinders, wagons and sedans that made it common outside the US. Datsun just pretty much sold only the Z and 510 (in much smaller numbers) with the occasional truck. And when you get down to it, unlike the FB's rotary (which was upgraded over time) the L28 was outdated even when it showed up in the Z (seriously Nissan. Non-crossflow?).
And I know you're not a fan of V8s in a Z... but in a recent QnA with some people ... I've worked out how I would go about with an engine swap down the road. I'm looking at an early 70s 302 w/ 289 rods and crank and a "30 overbore and good heads. I plan to cobble together a 7000-8000 (9000 if I'm lucky) giving me a cheap ($3500-$4000) 350-400HP at a sky high RPM. Basically, RB25 power without the turbo, and the V8 actually weighs less than the L engine by about 50 lbs or so, so handling won't be ruined.

Compared to a RB swap (3x the price for the same power, needs lots of custom work) a 2JZ (2x the price for the same power and more weight) or a BMW (way too copmlicated) I think I can pull off the same high-revving smooth nature of a I6 with a small-displacement V8.

So an '85 GSL-SE might not be such a bad idea after all then? I've already tracked down two rotary experts here in Sweden, so I know I'll have some assistance with building the engine. Due to Swedish regulations it will have to stay N/A, so I plan to build a high-revving, fire-spitting monster of a 13B (20B is expensive and tricky to install). Of course, since I don't trust my own skills yet (and don't have much money) I'm going to keep the power fairly stock at first and focus on the chassis and suspension.
Also @V8 swap:
Power isn't everything, do you really NEED 350-400 horsepower immediately? If you wait a bit you'll be able to afford a respectable L or RB build (which doesn't have to be 350-400 hp TBH, since even 250 is a ton of power in a car that light).
Personally, I feel an N/A straight 6 is the only engine for the S30. IMO, turbocharging is more appropriate in an S130 or Z31.

I'd love to put an N/A straight six into one, but you're looking at a 10,000$ budget to end up with a car that is about as fast as a nice Fiesta. Even 200HP is rather expensive without turbos or a swap.
I can't find a good FB nearby (as in, 50 seconds of searching) but FCs are pretty common around here.

People out here really hate rotaries and won't put up with the costly/time-intensive maintenence they need, so RX-7s (which sold in large numbers too) don't fetch a premium either despite being classic.
EDIT: And you're right. Power isn't everything, but before I do an engine swap, I plan to do a tear-down and weld the chassis together with some reinforcement, and rebuild the interior extremely cleanly. I love the S30 but I want one that is fast and can be brought up to modern spec. So it's not just for the power, but raising its specs all over without breaking the bank on a Rebello racing motor or RB swap.

Well, if I wanted an FC I could get one about as cheaply in Germany (with more power than US-spec IIRC and a km/h speedo already installed...). Nope, FCs might be less common than FDs at meets and track days here, but I want to be even more hipster than that! I've got to impress Speedhunters at the 201x Gatebil Mantorp event, you know (otherwise I can't justify getting Speedhunters stickers to myself)!

To me the wondrous thing with the S30 is that it's one of those cars that will always feel a lot faster than they really are. Heck, even in Fourza it feels incredibly fast even in the lowly E class!

90% of my time on GT5 was spent taking a 240ZG around and outrunning FCs, 86s, and Civics, so I still love its underdog character.
I (shamefully admitted) went to the Dodge Challenger school of sports cars. I graduated and went to Grad School at the 280ZX school, so I've got this weird deep-love of high horsepower, big tires, and pistol grip shifters, mixed with low-drag, light weight, and turbos with IRS. Since my first real car crush was a 1965 Mustang (and I still regret going for a 90s mustang instead of restoring a '65-67 back in 2008 when I had the chance to buy one) I've got a fond attachment to high-RPM V8s. I think at the end of the day, having a well-built low-stroke V8 pushed to as high RPM as I can take it put inside a sleek, aerodynamic (*coughafterbumperremovalcough*) Japanese lightweight body pretty much hits all of my personal love-spots for cars.

Most people would agree with you. I would too, but I'd rather see a Z every day in my garage than a Trans Am. Anything with a Pontiac badge is exorbitantly overpriced now too, since the marque's demise.
